JOBE 5th Anniversary

The Jeune Orchestre Baroque Européen celebrates its 5th anniversary on the stage of the Opéra National de Montpellier!

Since its creation, the JOBE has supported young European artists at the crucial stage of embarking on their professional careers. Each year, a new promotion comes together to work on a major work from the Baroque repertoire, combining intensive training, artistic exchange and performance practice under the guidance of renowned artists and teachers.

Over the past five years, the JOBE has become a key programme for supporting young musicians as they enter the profession. Beyond artistic development, it offers them first-hand experience of every stage of a professional production, from rehearsals to performance, while enabling them to build strong connections with our partners: artists, festivals and cultural institutions.

To celebrate both its 5th anniversary and the very purpose at the heart of the project, the JOBE is embarking on an exceptional staged production at the Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier, centred around one of the founding masterpieces in the history of opera: Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.

This new adventure will offer participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in every aspect of an opera production — music, theatre and dramaturgy — and to experience the entire creative process of bringing an opera to the stage as part of a professional artistic team.

For this special edition, recruitment will be open exclusively to instrumentalists and will take place in two steps: an initial selection based on video applications, followed by final in-person auditions in Paris.

L’ORFEO

Opera in five acts and a prologue, with a libretto by Alessandro Striggio (c. 1573–1630).
First performed on 24 February 1607 in Mantua.

“Orpheus descends into the Underworld to bring Eurydice back to life. His only weapon: his voice and the power of his song. In 1607, Monteverdi transformed this founding myth into one of the earliest masterpieces in the history of opera—a work in which music does not merely accompany the drama, but becomes its very driving force.”

More than four centuries later, L’Orfeo has lost none of its evocative power. Its instrumental colours, expressive recitatives and vivid choruses still speak directly to our emotions. Under the direction of Sylvain Sartre and Margaux Blanchard, the Jeune Orchestre Baroque Européen brings to this score the freshness and commitment of a new generation of musicians trained in the demands and subtleties of historically informed performance.
